1 yr old nanday conure behavior changes

I have a nanday conure that we bought from a pet store when he was 9 months old. The day before his birthday (5/22/11) we had him out, perched on our hand. All of a sudden the pupil in his eye got really small and he abruptly flew straight into the wall about 12-15 feet away. He kept flying and came back to me. He had a cut above his head (more scab, hardly any blood) and was a little frighten. We kept an eye on him everyday since (almost a week) and he seems to be a little different now. Everything scares him. He wants to fly all the time. He bites more and much harder (ouch!). Though, there are certain things that remain the same, he still comes to us, he still plays, he's eating and drinking water, etc. Prior to this incident, he did have a biting issue that we don't know how to train him out of but it was only when he was tired or concentrated on something and we bothered him.

This is my first bird I have owned. I love animals and always want to do what's best. I would greatly appreciate any feedback on his behavior changes and any other training tips you may have.

Kindest Regards,
Remy's owner

Conure behavior changed after flying into wall
by: Tracie

Anytime your bird suddenly acts different, it is a possibility that it is sick or injured. I suggest you take your bird to an avian vet, especially if the bird has not been seen by an avian vet for an exam and vaccine.

I am not clear on if this was the first time you had him out and he flew or not. Either way, I believe it would be best if you had his wings trimmed by an experienced breeder or better yet an avian vet. This would keep the bird from flying around and hurting itself again and getting scared.

We have some training articles on our Parrot Training page that will help you with the biting issue. Learning your bird's body language will be most helpful. Usually when the pupil gets small, the bird is upset and may bite or fly away if it can.
