11 year old green cheek conure too late for a mate/friend

Hi, I've had my green cheek conure for approx. 11 years now and have had him since he was bred. Oliver is a typical cheeky boy and due to my circumstances changing (two kids, part time job, 2 dogs etc) he's not getting as much attention as he used to. Although he has out time every day and my children help clean him and feed him he has recently started to hide under his newspaper, tapping the floor with his beak.
I know this is probably his way of gaining attention but I am asking for advice as to whether another green cheek would provide company and companionship etc or is he to old now?

I look forward too hearing from you

Hi there, good question, We are going through something similar. We have a fun loving one year old Sun Conure, but are thinking of getting another one whether they get along or not. We know that when you buy another parrot, you take a chance all around. I do think company helps, it entertains them while you are busy but I do understand that they would both require handling, mushy time and play time. lol. Just like children, even though they play together, they will all come around looking for your one on one. I guess thats the best way to see it. More work, More noise, but...More love to go around.

Getting a 2nd green cheek conure
by: Tracie

The think is, you would have to get another cage etc. and take the chance that they may never get along. The bird may still like the company, but you would need to purchase the bird for YOU and not the bird. You will be the one taking care for the bird now and for years to come.

I am glad you wrote, because I went through this too. I wrote about my experience in an article on our Parrot Training page titled "Should I get another GC Conure?"

Our two conures fortunately DID end up getting along and were able to live in the same cage eventually. But we had twice the noise and twice the mess and 2 birds wanting our attention. LOL
