2 parakeet's, 1 with seizures, 1 plucking

by jennie

I have 2 parakeets, 1 is an American budgie and she is almost 6 years old, the other is a female English budgie we rescued 4 years ago so not sure how old she is. In the last few days the American female started having seizures, about 1 every other day now and the English female started plucking all her feathers out.

They are both very healthy and get fruit & veggies every day, are only locked in their cage at night to sleep and we play with them all the time, so they are happy birds. Any idea what might be causing this to happen to both of them ?

We recently bought some dowels to make them a toy and we made sure to get plain ones, just wood, that was a couple weeks ago. We've bought these same ones before to make their swings and never had a problem but we did take the toy away for now just in case.

These girls are like our kids and we lost our male last year Nov. He just started bleeding out one day and was gone 2 days later, just out of the blue after 5 years. I know they don't live forever but I really don't want to loose them.

Parakeets with health problems
by: Tracie

There is no telling what is causing these problems, or what killed your other bird for that matter, without your taking your birds to an avian vet.

Please use this Find an Avian Vet link to find an avian vet for your bird so it can be examined to determine what is wrong and what the potential treatment might be.

I am not sure where you live, but a healthy diet would consist of high quality pellets, to make sure they have a balanced diet. If the fruit or veggies are not organic, then it is possible they are getting the poison put on the crops when you feed them.
