Baby conure with splay legs
by: The Vet

You should remove the egg only is she is not sitting on it. You should also have the baby looked at by an avian veterinarian to splint the legs. Doing so early can treat this problem.

The one with the odd legs needs a trip to an Avian Vet to see if there is something that can be done to help. Also, make sure you are feeding a high quality handfeeding formula like RowdyBush or one of the others. Parents need to be eating a high quality pelleted diet as well. Also, you need a set of scales that weighs in grams with a basket on top (they make these for birds) so you can weigh your babies every day. If babies do not gain weight every day, it usually means they have a bacterial infection that must be treated by an Avian Vet. If you do not keep on top of this, your babies could die as the young just can't hold on with an infection as long as the older birds.

Since you just have the two, I'd let the other egg hatch. The Mother could abandon the other two if you go messing with the nest at this point. Let the Mother feed the babies as much as is possible so they are imprinted on their Mother and not you. You may have to supplement the smaller ones as the larger babies shove the younger ones out of the way at feeding time, so you will need to keep an eye on this. If you have the right kind of nestbox that hangs outside the cage with a door in the back, you will be able to check on them to make sure everyone is getting enough food. Don't interfere unless you need to, and in the case of the one with the malformed legs, you HAVE TO. Just put him in a small box with some soft, light colored cloth so he can stay warm on way to and from vet. You could warm the little cloths in the dryer before you put him in there.

Just as a caution note, leave the last egg alone and let this mother bird feed her babies and take care of them. Even if you have to handfeed some, you can still put babies back into the nest box with mother. Babies do not eat during the night and usually wake up hungry first thing in the mornings. There is a fine line between interfering too much and not interfering enough.
