3 Months Sun Conure Neck Very Tender and Swollen

by Alex

Hello, I have a 3 months old sun conure which I bought just this last saturday. I am not familiar with birds a lot, but today when I came home and held him, I felt like is chest/neck was swollen. Very tender and feels like there is water underneath. I am not sure if this is normal, he seems to be feeling fine and I tried to rub his neck to see if it hurts, but even f I massage deep, he doesn't seem to show symptoms of pain. Please let me know if this is normal or do I need to take him to a vet. Thank you.

Are you feeling the crop? Before you run to the vet, call your breeder and see if you can bring the bird by for them to look at.

The other thing is you need to get some books and/or other information about your bird. Most people do their studying BEFORE they get their bird, so now you need to catch up on how to house and maintain your bird.

Diet is extremely important, and he needs to be eating a high quality organic pelleted diet like Harrison's. If he is eating an all seed diet, he is NOT getting the nutrition he needs. Tracie carries the Harrisons out here along with several other organic pelleted diets.

So, buy some books and start doing some research on the internet about your bird so you'll know how to care for him. Take him to the vet immediately before this problem gets worse. He may have an infection. If you bought him from a pet store, I guarantee you he's sick. Once they sell the birds, they don't care if they live or die, so it's up to you to get him well, on a good diet and housed in the right kind of cage with natural wood perches and safe toys. All of this is covered in books and other material you'll find on the internet. Tracie has some good books here to get you started as well as the right foods.

Thank You for writing and let us know how he's doing. Post a little picture when you can.
