30 yr old parrot just laid first egg,

What can I do to prevent my 30 yr old yellow nape from laying any more eggs. She never did til last week, she pushed out a large egg, with blood on it, and she dripped a couple of drops of blood. She was scared of the egg, so we could not leave it for her to see that it was there, as all vets say to do.

We are worried, when will she stop doing this, and do we have to worry all year long, we travel in an rv a lot, away from our bird vet, and it has us concerned now. Will she continue to do this or maybe she will not do it ever again? any advice. we both love her so and do not want to lose her for any reason. Donna

First of all, if your bird is eating Harrison's or Roudybush pellets, then you will not have to worry about egg binding. Our avian vet says that in his over 30 year practice not one bird eating Harrison's pellets has ever been egg bound.

Switching Birds To Pellets article Your bird should be eating 80% pellets and only 20% healthy treats. No salt, sugar or chemicals in the food.

If you shorten the birds day time light, by putting the bird in a dark room at night, then it will simulate winter and may help the bird to not lay eggs. Please read our Chronic Egg Laying article written by an avian vet for more information on caring for birds that lay eggs, even though your bird is not a chronic egg layer.

Thanks for writing, and enjoy your trips with your bird.
