35 year old Yellow Nape Amazon Parrot

My 35 year old Yellow Nape passed away today.
Just recently within the past 5-8 months he seen the vet for upper infection, told the vet he was throwing up all the time but she said he lived his life expectancy and then some as he lost weight and now when she was not here was away I rushed him to a new vet as i cound him on the bottome of his cage just laying there, gasping.

I fed him everyday, even today, he had scrambled eggs etc. plus his food, he always ate everything but while eating he would regurgatate his food.

The vet today said that he died because of not eating. However he was eating but would just jerk his head and it would come out all the time.

Can you tell me what you think caused his throwing up? Or is that part of being his age and possible complications with some other issue?
Thanks,
Mary

Amazon parrot death
by: The Vet

I am sorry to hear you have lost your companion. This is likely not age related, although age can be playing a part in this, albeit a small part, in my opinion. I see many amazons in their 30?s and 40?s that are healthy. Without the advantage of at least examining your bird, or seeing some blood work results, I can only speculate as to the cause of death.

I would first guess that nutrition was a large part of this problem. If he was eating scrambled eggs every day, then he surely had high cholesterol and high triglycerides, which would have caused heart disease. Other nutritional problems could have contributed to his death if he was not on a pellet diet.

The regurgitation or vomiting could indicate the he had PDD (proventricular dilatation disease, caused by a virus), he could have had cancer, which is not uncommon in amazons this age. I don?t know where the upper infection was, but if he had an upper respiratory infection, then that could have complicated his health condition; if he had an upper gastrointestinal infection, that would explain the regurgitation.

I encourage you to take him in for a necropsy (animal autopsy) to determine the cause of death.

Again, please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss.

MARY, THANKS FOR WRITING, AND 35 YEARS IS NOT THE LIFESPAN OF THESE AMAZONS. They can live up to 70-75 years, so the vet who told you that was VERY WRONG. Your bird died because of some kind of infection that was not being treated by the vet who told you about lifespan.

We are sorry for your loss, and your bird was NOT eating if he was throwing up his food. Certain viral infections will cause this to happen.

Do not get another bird until you thoroughly clean cage, perches, toys, and area around where bird cage and perches are. Actually, clean entire house top to bottom because viruses can live anywhere.

The Amazons live up to 75 years of age, as I have Amazons right now that are 35 years old, and they are healthy and happy birds with LOTS of years left to them.

DO NOT TAKE ANYMORE BIRDS BACK TO THAT VET AS THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING. YOUR BIRD MAY BE DEAD BECAUSE OF IT, THOUGH THERE IS NO WAY TO TELL AT THIS POINT. JUST TAKE ANY NEW BIRDS TO A VET MORE KNOWLEDGABLE ABOUT BIRDS.

Again, we are sorry for your loss, and take time to grieve for your sweet bird before even thinking of another one.

Linda
