4-year old parakeet sleeping alot

I have a four-year old female parakeet, and for the past week or so, she has been napping off and on all day. She wakes, eats, drinks, sometimes chirps, then she fluffs up and takes another nap. Her droppings are normal, she eats very well.

I was wondering if she could still be responding to something that happened a few weeks ago. I was adding a new toy to her cage, and she flew out (she is not hand tamed, her previous owner used to grab her to clip the flight feathers and the little parakeet is very afraid of hands). She bumped into several walls before I was able to capture her and put her back in her cage. (I was worried, because we share our home with a cat, luckily the cat ran into the basement when the little parakeet flew out of her cage.)

Parakeet probably sick
by: The Avian Vet

Your description is that of a budgie who does not feel well. Her escape was a stressful event and likely contributed to an underlying problem, known in general as subclinical disease. Many times when birds are sick, they will pretend to eat, and sleep more than usual. I recommend that you put her in a small cage with a heating pad on top to keep her warm until you can take her to see an avian veterinarian.
