6 week old eclectus eating solids

by ashley
(ohio)

I have a 6 week old female eclectus. She is hand fed 3x a day, but was very interested in my steamed veggies I gave her some and she loved it, is she too young for solids? They were steamed and mushy. She even grabbed some herself out of the bowl. Is this ok?

Thanks linda! I don't plan on weaning for quite some time yet. I hand feed her formula and when she is almost full I let her have some of the veggies, thanks for the advice on the pellets. I am new to this and I love her so much I want to do everything right and give her the best. She is such a sweetheart.

Hi and thanks for writing. Yes, some soft cooked veggies, mixed veggies, bean cuisine, diced fruit and crushed pellets are good to start at about 6 weeks. You can find high quality organic pellets here with the best being Harrison's. They have a small size for smaller birds like budgies, called fine grind, which with might be an okay size to feed without crushing. Be sure and start her off right with the pellets and get organic and stay away from Zu-Preem, Lafaefer's because they are junk food with dye, sugar, and preservatives which are very hard on birds of any kind. Take a look at the "organic" section here and the Harrisons in particular.

Here is an in-depth article about weaning, for you. Don't be too quick to wean your baby as this can cause all manner of problems as you will see in the article. They suggest not getting into weaning until 3-4 months and allowing baby to be the one who wants to wean off the handfeeding formula instead of you:
