7 week old Orange Winged Amazon itching
by: Sandra D Singh

Nakita, I'm originally from Trinidad and I also had a beautiful Orange Winged Amazon that lived for 38 years; he never scratched contantly. To answer your question, NO it is NOT NORMAL for your Orange Winged Amazon to be constantly scratching. And YES you should, be worried. All birds do scratch and preen themselves but scratching constantly? NO.
Presently, I do have an Orange Winged Amazon here in Toronto. I bought him when he was 3 months old and next month he'd be 5 years. I do know alot about Amazons; I grew up taking care of ONLY Amazons and no other birds. Hence the reason I bought my Amazon that I now have; they're so cute especially when they shall talk.
As you know, most people in Trinidad catches them in the forest. The one I had in Trinidad; my brother caught him for me. In Canada we do have to buy them and they're very expensive; over 2 thousand Canadian.
I do think that your bird maybe infested with some kind of parasite; if constantly scratching, something is definitely wrong. You should take him/her to An Avian Vet as soon as possible. And Nakita PLEASE DO NOT DELAY. It can be very uncomfortable for him/her to be constantly scratching; think about it.
The vet shall give you a medicated spray to use on your bird and cage. The vet would also advise you to bathe your bird with COOL temperature water and then spray him/her with the medication. Then wash the cage, toys, perches, food cups and everything that the bird has been using, with hot water and then spray the cage too.
I know this only too well because one of my friends had this problem in Trinidad with her bird and I accompanied her and bird to the vet; in Saint Augustine. If you do cover your bird when he/she sleeps, make sure the covering is a piece of cloth or towel and ALWAYS CLEAN. Please DON'T use a rice bag as some people do in Trinidad.
Nakita, I do wish you the best with your bird and hope that your lovely bird would get well very soon, take care and God bless.

Unless your bird is growing in new feathers, there is something wrong.

Amazons are not supposed to be weaned until they are about 3 months old, so your bird could very well be sick. Please find an Avian Vet ONLY in your area because they are the only vets licensed and trained in bird care. The fact your bird still does not have its feathers, is itching and has been weaned too early all point to sickness or disease. Please try and find an Avian Vet in your area to examine your bird.

Do not use any over the counter remedies, medicines or any of the medicines found in pet stores. Until bird is examined by an avian vet who can diagnose the problem, it cannot be treated.

Let us know what avian vet has to say, and I hope all is well.
