New conure biting when getting out of cage
by: Tracie

Hopefully your bird's wings are trimmed. If they are, then you might try using a natural wood branche to get your bird out of the cage instead of your hand.

You will need to slowly get the bird used to sitting on the branch, and then start moving it closer and closer to getting out the door every day.

You might want to spend a few days just letting the bird get to know you and you getting to know the bird before attempting to get the bird out of the cage. We have some training articles on our Parrot Training page that will be a good start for you to learn how to train your bird.

A LOT of bird training is just developing a relationship of trust. Once trust is broken, it can be a long time before the bird trusts you or any human. I was not paying attention to my mother's bird once, when I was holding it. I was just talking away to my mom, not noticing the bird was agitated. The bird bit me, I jerked and made a loud "ouch" noise due to being startled by the pain, the bird flew to the floor and was scared of me from then on.

I could have developed a relationship again if I spent more time at her house with the bird, but I don't get her way often enough.

I tell that story just encourage you to take it slow and pay attention to your bird's body language when you are holding it.
