a 6 year old severe macaw worth to buy?
by: Linda

6 years old is a very young bird, so that is a plus. If the bird is very healthy he could be worth up to $600. Of course, in order to make sure bird is healthy will call for a trip to an Avian Vet before buying. I don't know if you're talking about buying from a pet store or a breeder, but see if they will either take bird to Avian Vet or give you credit for the cost of the vet check(a minimum of $100). A lot of pet store birds have infections already, and these infections have to be diagnosed and then correctly treated by an Avian Vet only. So you need to find an Avian Vet in your driving area if you're going to take him to vet. Do not take to dog and cat vets because they are not licensed or trained in the care of birds and will not be able to diagnose or treat correctly.

You also have to consider a large cage for your bird. The Severe's have a long tail, so cage has to be tall enough for the tail and wide enough so bird can fully spread wings out and flap without hitting anything in cage including sides. This will be a considerable investment. If buying a used cage make sure all the bars are well covered with the powder coat paint and that it is lead/zinc free. Perches should be safe natural branch wood as the wooden dowels that come with cages are hard on the feet and legs of a bird.

The other thing you must consider is how much you know about the Macaw family of birds. Make sure you have done your homework about the Severe Macaw. Feeding is also the cornerstone of a healthy bird, so all seed diet will not work. Organic pellets will work, and there are several kinds here. Make no changes in diet until Avian Vet has either cleared bird for disease/infections or has diagnosed problems and offered appropriate treatment plans. Here is a link on how to go about changing from seeds to pellets which takes time:

So, all together you're looking at an investment of around $2,000 and possibly more before cage is fully outfitted as it needs to be. Never get a bird without first getting all the supplies you'll need for him.

Thanks for writing and good luck,
Linda

6 year old macaw worth buying?
by: Tracie

How much the bird should cost depends on supply and demand in your area. I have no idea of knowing that.

Make sure you have researched all you can about this species. Make sure not just you, but all household members are willing to put up with the mess and noise a macaw will add to the home.

Make sure this bird has been seen by an avian vet and has been given a certificate of good health. It is well worth the money to take this bird to an avian vet. This bird will potentially live 40 years or more if it is healthy now and you feed it Harrison's or Roudybush pellets for 80% of it's diet.
