Abnormal Feather loss and growths On my Budgie

by Chloe
(South Wales)

My Budgerigar is around 6 years old. In the past six months his feathers have been doing very strange things. At first he started getting bald patches under his wings so I assumed he was board and got him new toys ect. Then he grew down feathers (baby bird feathers) in between his normal feathers. His tail feathers repeated a pattern of falling out then regrowing several times how ever this time they have not stopped growing and are now an extra 2 inches longer than his healthy friends tail feathers.

He still eats and doesn't appear to have any other problems eg breathing. But he can no longer fly. His companion has not shown any symptoms. Do you have any idea what is wrong with my Budgie?

Bird losing or picking feathers
by: Tracie

Dr B can not tell you over the Internet what might be wrong. It could be feather destruction done by the bird or it's partner or it could be a disease or infection. Only an in person visit with an avian vet will give the answer.

Please Find an Avian Vet for your bird and also read the Feather Damaging Behavior article written by an avian vet.
