abnormal feather loss

by Alyssa
(New York)

he has lost more feathers since this picture has been taken

he has lost more feathers since this picture has been taken

I have an 8 month old Indian Ringneck and he is losing his feathers, he is not molting because its been too long and no feathers are growing back but I do see pin feathers. he is bald on his head and neck, I though it might have been an iodine deficiency and started putting iodine drops in his water and since he doesn't drink that much I put the iodine water in his fruits and vegetable dish and still no feathers growing back! he is acting and eating normal and playing. please help!

Took him to the vet
by: Anonymous

I stopped giving him the iodine drops and i took him to the vet about a week ago and the vet says he has no signs of being sick and he did a culture and gave me antibiotics for 14 days since he was very itchy along with loosing feathers and its seems to be helping.
Thank you again for your input!

Abnormal feather loss does not need iodine suppliment
by: The Avian Vet

Stop adding things to his water immediately. Stop using iodine in his food, to. This is not going to help and may cause additional problems recommend that you have your bird examined by an avian veterinarian.

Find an Avian Vet

This could be a nutritional problem, or it could be a disease, such as PBFD (Beak and Feather disease virus). It is not related to molting because normal molting does not cause bare spots.

You need to feed a good pellet diet such as Harrison's which should be 80% of the diet. The remainder can be any healthy treat. This will guarantee that your bird has a complete and balanced diet. But the feather loss needs to be diagnosed.

Thank you!
by: Alyssa

Thank you for responding i just took him to the vet today and the vet said he is healthy but they took a culture test anyway and i will have to call back on Wednesday but he said hes not sick and that he could just be plucking the feathers around his neck and just scratching too much on his head and he recommended me Necton S vitamins for him so i am getting him that tomorrow!
Thank you again for your input and for responding :]

Bird losing feathers with iodine suppliment
by: Tracie

Dr B will eventually answer this, but I strongly suggest you Find an Avian Vet to examine your bird in person. It may have a disease.
