abscess on toe

What Tracie said about the neosporin is quite true. Never use anything greasy on your bird because it ends up all over them, and it effects them like the oil spills effect the water birds. Once it is all over the bird, it closes the skin to air circulation which in turn suffocates the bird.

Vasoline, neosporin and any other greasy product will kill your bird. Clean off any of the cream with the peroxide and then get your bird to an Avian vet as fast as you can go. This kind of infection will become systemic in a short time period, and then you'll be dealing with a very sick bird who refuses to eat which is very, very bad.

Let us know what the vet has to say and thanks for writing.

Bird with puss in toe injury

I really appreciate your writing and asking about this. Unfortunately, what works for your cat is really bad for your bird.

Our avian vet says to never use greasy creams, like neosporin, on birds. You need to take the bird to an avian vet to be examined and get a prescription for something appropriate for birds. An infection can kill your bird very quickly. Please don't try to treat your bird yourself and DO NOT take your bird to a regular dog vet. They kill more birds than they help due to lack of training and experience with exotic birds.

Let us know how it goes with the avian vet. If you need help finding an avian vet, you can look for one on our Find an Avian Vet page.
