Active female budgie wants to sleep all the time now

by Linda
(Calgary, AB, Canada)

Hi, I have a 2.5 yr old female budgie that has been extremely active and within the last few weeks has become very tired and not as active. I have not changed the diet of seeds, supplements and fruits/veggies. Her eating habits haven't changed. She still eats a lot, but now her droppings are bigger since she isn't as active. I don't know what is causing her to sleep all the time. I have 2 other budgies and they are fine. I know I should take her to the vet, but I thought I would try this first.

Budgie is doing better
by: Linda

I took my budgie to the vet and she is ok. She has a minor infection, which we are caring for with Milk Thistle and Pretty Bird powder. She is much more active now and is slowly getting back to her normal active, silly, crazy little self. I appreciate your help.

Thank You.

Bird sleeping all the time
by: Tracie

I am so sorry your bird is sick. There is really nothing Dr B or anyone can do to help your bird over the Internet. Your bird must be examined and possibly have blood and fecal tests run to determine what is causing this. Also, there are no over the counter treatments that are safe.

If your bird is on a seed diet, that could be the problem. Seeds and human food can not provide an exotic bird with the proper nutrition. Over the counter vitamins can cause illness and kill birds. (I killed my first bird by putting vitamins in the water and feeding it a seed diet.)

Dr B would like you to read his Switching Birds to Pellets article and there are other health related and training articles on our Parrot Training page.
