Afican Greys beak scratching

by shannara
(casa, arkansas)

Hello everyone, I have 2 wonderful African greys or should I say they have had me for 5 years LOL.
I keep one concrete perch in their cage and one in their out of cage play area for natural nail trimming along with many shredding, forging and climbing toys.
My question is both my babies like to rub their beaks on this and cause scratches on their beautiful beaks. Can they OVER scratch their beaks? They do see their vet yearly and are in good health. They just love to clean their beak after a meal on the concrete perches.
Thank you and much birdie love

beak scratching

I supply wood smooth perches, sand blasted Java wood perches , rope perches and concreat perches varying in size, shape, slope as well as heated perches toward the top of cage in the cooler months for sleeping warm and safe.
I have seen an averary vet and my birds pass the health check with fighing colors . I was just wondering can there be damage to the beak with scratch it. I know thier beaks could be smooth and shiney but mine are never due to this scratching.
Is beak scratching a natural means to trim their beak? or a sign of self mutilation that I need to get hold of and stop?

Editor's note: It is okay that their beak gets scratched by the perch. If they do this all day long, like something is bothering them, then that is when you need to be concerned.

Birds scratching beaks on perch
by: Tracie

This is normal behavior most of the time. If they seem to continue to do this all day, then there is something wrong and you need to Find an Avian Vet for your bird(s).

Our avian vet suggests the Polly's Pastel Pedicure Perch and the Safety Pedicure Perch along with Rope Boings and Perches throughout the cage for foot health.

If you only provide concrete perches, and I am not saying you do, your birds can develop foot problems.
