Afraid of lights?

I've noticed that my Green Cheeked Conure would eye the lights in my room funny a lot. I recently got a new floor lamp and was holding my bird and just so happened to walk by it. He was so terrified by this that he tried to fly away, but having his feathers trimmed, he just fluttered to the ground. He did this a few more times when I walked by the lamp. Why is he doing this?
