African Grey falling off perch

by Carolyn Bessire

My 11 year old African Grey fell off his perch and when I picked him up he was breathing extemely heavy and had a temporary loss of one foot to perch. After a minute or so he was fine.

Was this a seizure or a stroke. Or what was it.

This sounds very much like a seizure and do not delay in taking him to an Avian Vet to have him tested for toxins, infections and problems with his organs. Though he is not considered old, he could have a hidden problem you are not aware of, so please have him in for a good going over with the avian vet.

Hopefully, you are feeding him an organic pelleted diet like Harrison's because all seed diets with or without fruit and veggies is a very poor diet and causes fatty liver disease and kidney problems.

Be sure to have him tested for toxins of all kinds including lead and zinc because these will also cause seizures as will other toxins in his environment or your home. Tell the avian vet about his cage, toys and your home in general.

Thanks for writing and let us know what avian vet had to say.
