Picture of Possible Area Wear Plucking May Be

Lately, I have been noticing an area on my African Grey's, Ruby's, back where there have been less feathers. She is currently one year, two months old and African Grey Parrots are supposed to start molting at this age. I am currently unsure whether the area with fewer feathers is as a result of feather plucking or molting.

This has only been occurring for the last couple of days so it is likely not yet a habit of hers. I believe that one possibility for the plucking is the fact that we had bathroom remodeling for the past three weeks and Ruby had to be moved to an area she was not used to living in; plus the workers made a lot of noise. The workers finished about five days ago and Ruby is back to where her cage used to be. It would be really helpful to know whether she is molting or if she really has a feather plucking problem. If you think that she does, could you recommend what I should do?

Thank you,
Dennis and Ruby

AG possible plucking
by: The Avian Vet

I cannot tell from the picture if it is plucking or molting. The overall feather quality appears good and I do not see any bare patches. My recommendation is to have your bird seen by an avian veterinarian for a regular check up and vaccines and have the Dr. look closely to see I there are any signs of plucking.

It is possible with the remodeling, etc. that plucking could be a rule out. Please follow the link for some further reading about plucking that may help. Here is the Feather Damaging Behavior article.
