Foot Problem
by: Anonymous

My African Grey is 33 years old and started having problems with his foot. It is stiff and he has trouble holding on to the purch. He has a difficult time opening his toes, they stay curled.

Editor's note: In the future if you want people to see and answer, you need to post a question, not an answer here to another question, on our Parrot Questions page.

Please use this Find an Avian Vet link to find an avian vet for your bird so it can be examined to determine what is wrong and what the potential treatment might be.

Dr B will eventually answer this, but I suspect it is bumblefoot. You need to provide a variety of Rope Boings and Perches and natural wood branches to encourage good foot health.

Diet plays an important role also. Your bird should be eating 80% Harrison's or Roudybush pellets, no colored pellets or cheap pellets that are full of sugar and chemicals. Don't feed table food that is seasoned with salt or chemical additives.

The vet who runs this site, cannot diagnose your bird from a photo, although it does help.

To truely get an answer about your bird's foot, she needs to be seen by an avian vet before it gets too bad. If you wait to get her to an avian vet, and the problem gets worse, your bird could end up losing her foot.

Please have her seen, and have tests ran. Only a vet who is able to physically examine your bird can give proper diagnosis.

Editor's note: An avian vet does not run this site, he simply answers some questions when he has time.
