African Grey Parrot Spinal Injury

by jay

I just want to know from experience how long does it take for a 10 year old African Grey Parrot to heal from a spinal injury. I believed my pet fell from his perch about 5 feet high from the ground. The diagnosis from the x-ray showed that the spinal injury was the reason why my parrot will not use his legs because of the pain.

Its legs are not broken and will move when pinched. The treatment so far has been anit-inflammatory medicine that have been injected twice and orally administered twice a day. Thank you for your time.

This is not enough information for me to be able to give you a prognosis for your bird. The recovery time is dependent on the severity of the injury, which determines whether the nerves are just swollen or completely torn. If the nerves are swollen, typically treatment will reduce them enough immediately to show improvement within a couple of hours, and full recovery in a few days. If there fractures of the back bone, this will take much longer too heal. If there are severed nerves, they will never heal.

I am sorry to hear that you bird has been injured. I hope that he recovers.
