i just bought a congo that is 4 years old and is a male, its last owner was a female and her 2 kids. The bird gets along with my wife but it takes her a little work to get him to go on her arm and when i do that he tries to pick at me. Why does he do that?

Biting African Grey
by: Kralice4u

I also own an African Grey.
It takes time to gain the trust of any new bird; especially if it had a previous owner that it had already bonded with.
Many birds tend to bond with one memeber of the family more so than the others.
Then without any reason they can turn and bond with someone else.
Let me give you an example of a Grey's behavior:
"I" spend most of the time with my African Grey.
I feed him, play with him, and teach him tricks. He only immitates MY voice. He will let me pick him up and he loves to ride on my shoulder and on top of my head. He will let me pet his head, but I can not touch him anywhere else.
My husband, on the other hand, rarely says a word to him, but I think he would sell all of his feathers for my husband. My husband can pick him up, turn him upside down, pet his back, you name it.
Do not take it personal that your bird is nipping at you. It is just their way.
Do not give up on him. Be patient.
