african grey respiratory problem (hooting noise)

by jayne

my parrot had an asthma attack that seems to have progressed into a 'cold'. Been to the vets twice and she has been given 2 lots of antibiotics to clear it up. She gets out of breath if she flies, but other than that seems to have improved and not struggling to breathe....however she now makes a 'hooting' noise. do you think she has a blockage and will she get over herself....she has also been shivering a lot. eating and drinking fine and doesn't seem distressed.

thanks for any help. might be another trip to the vets if she doesn't get rid of this..

Hi, Thanks for your comments. Yes have seen an avian vet twice and spoke again over the phone to find that I should use olbas oil or vics in a bowl of hot water by her cage and cover her up. Bit like we would do if we had blocked airways. Done this morning and evening for 10 minutes and it seems to be working.

I think she was shivering out of anxiety because whenever I observe her closely she is worried I will put her in a box and take her to the vets!

Funny how birds are so emotional.

Have also scrubbed the cage and keeping her warm. She is currently ringing her bell so can't be that unwell :-)

African grey not getting well

Did you take your bird to an avian vet, or a cat/dog vet that happens to treat birds? If you are not seeing an avian vet, please make an appointment with an avian vet soon.

I would suggest making sure she's in a pretty clean environment (sanitation is usually pretty effective in healing).

The hooting - might be something new - it might NOT be a huge problem - but if your really concerned about it - a vet is your best best for sure!

Shivering...that's a problem. Birds are pretty delicate and if she doesn't seem distressed that's a good thing - but the shivering worries me. I would suggest keeping her somewhere with more optimal temperatures. Atleast until she gets over her cold?

Hope everything works out! =)
