African Grey scatching question

by Lee
(South Africa)

Hi I have a 10 year old African grey (with the maroon tail) she seems to be scratching herselft alot lately and when we assist in the scratching there seems to be like a dandruff like substance coming from the base of her feathers on and around her head area. Is this something to worry about and what should we do?

Scratching African Grey parrot
by: Tracie

African Grey parrots are "dusty" birds, but is sounds like your bird may be molting. Their new feathers come in with a white sheath on them, and when they scratch that sheath comes off and you will see white flakes and also the old feathers on the ground around the cage.

Because neither Dr B nor anyone else can examine your bird over the Internet, you should take your bird for an avian vet visit just to make sure there is not a health issue. Scratching can be a sign of an internal problem also.
