African grey with a swollen area above his nostril.

18 yr old african grey who has developed an area above his nostril that appears like a cyst. He doesn't appear to be in distress, but I have noticed that it has gotten bigger.
I am going to call the vet, but wanted to know a little more before going in. Thank you. Patty

Swelling

Hi Patty, and good for you to have already made an appointment with an Avian Vet. This could be a bacterial infection of some sort, and a trip to vet is exactly what your little guy needs. Vet will do a couple of tests, and give you meds for him if an infection is found.

Also, this could be some type of allergy, so be ready to give your vet a complete history for your bird including everything in your home that could cause any allergies. Birds can't be around perfumes or the air fresheners people frequently use in their homes. Hairspray, fingernail polish and remover can kill them as well as cigarette smoke and on and on.

Make some notes as to what your bird eats too as sometimes food allergies can cause problems. Also what kind of cage bird is in and what kind of material you use in the bottom tray would be good as well. Just any and everything you can think of will be helpful for vet, so they can have a complete history for your bird.

Let us know what vet said, and thank you for writing.

Linda
