AG parrot laying eggs

by Paula Chapman

My African Grey parrot has just laid an egg - this fell from the perch and smashed. She last laid two eggs 20 years ago and was very sick afterwards resulting in a very high vet fee. I have bought some calcium drops for her water, but is there anything else I can do? Please let me hear from you. She is a lovely parrot and I just dont want her to get sick again

Many thanks

Preventing illness when laying eggs
by: Tracie

Right now the only thing you can do is limit the daytime hours to mimic winter and remove anything that seems like a nest to the bird.

To prevent egg binding, you need to convert your bird to a high quality pellet like Harrison's or Roudybush pellets for 75 - 80% of her diet.

Our avian vet, that not only teaches avian medicine at the university but has had a practice for over 30 years, says he has never had a bird with egg binding issues that ate Harrison's pellets.
