Alexandrian Parrot plucking

I have an Alexandrian parrot. We were away on vacation for 1 week and had him stay with a friend. This week we are noticing a behavior where he appears to be pulling feathers from his chest. Today I put him back in his cage and he pulled a feather out. When I went to let him out again, he refused to come out.

This is most likely a behavioral issue, since the bird was not doing this before you left. Some birds are sensitive, and will start destructive behavior when they get upset.

Please read the Feather Damaging Behavior article on our Parrot Training page for more information.

If the bird continues to do this, you may need to Find an Avian Vet to make sure that the bird is not sick. Dr B can not help you over the Internet, because he can not examine your bird to tell you if this is behavioral or internal.
