Alexandrine beak discolouration

Hi, My Alexandrine is 11 years old and I have recently noticed that her beak is turning black, it started with a dot the size of a pin head on the top of her beak but there is now also a black strip running through the bottom of her beak as well.
Do you have any suggestions as to what could be causing this?

Thank You

Bird with beak discoloration

Please read and apply the Switching Birds To Pellets article that Dr B shared with you for information on the nutritional needs of your bird.

We also have health articles on our Parrot Training page that might help you.

Thanks for your reply,we have no avian vet in our area and our local vet is unable to advise us with this problem, do you have any suggestions as to the possible nutritional imbalances you mentioned? She also has arthritis and has been on an anti inflammatory on and off for the past few months and gets a glucosamine and condroiton supplement. She is hand reared and spends most of her time amongst people so to my knowledge she has not experienced any trauma and this is not a colour I have ever seen on her beak before. Any suggestions you may have would be very much appreciated.

Thank You

This could be normal pigmentation or it could be indicative of nutritional imbalance. Trauma can also cause these changes. I recommend that you have your bird examined by an avian veterinarian.
