Alexandrine Molting

I have read that the male Alexandrine Parrot develops his ring after his second molt? Mine is 1 1/2 years old and he is molting right now. I just got him last week, so I'm not sure if this is his first or second molt? What ages do they usually get their first molt and second molt? I see a faint black ring underneath his neck, but that is it so he too young to tell?

Also, he has a band on. I did not get him directly from the breeder, so I'm not sure what the letters and numbers mean. Is there a way I can find out? His band says "RAK FL 97." He was hatched on 2/26/07 and I do know that he was purchased from a breeder in Georgia. I live in Florida. Are there banding laws here in Florida that say he has to have a band on? I would like to have it taken off. Please let me know.

Thanks, Georgette

Molting and banding questions
by: Tracie

Hello Georgette,

I am sorry I am just now finding your question did not get answered.

I am not sure about the ring around your bird's neck. Birds usually molt twice a year I think, but some molt more often and some less often.

You can contact different band companies, like L & M and see if they can help you determine the numbers on the band. Your vet will know if you can remove the band.
