Alexandrine parakeet (unfortunately) leg pressed with plier and become swollen
by: Linda

Chances are good that you broke his leg and you will have to take him to be treated by an AVIAN VET ONLY in your area. Find an Avian Vet

I do not understand why you were putting some kind of restraint on his leg in the first place when that is what cages are for. If you do not have a cage for your bird you must get one and forget about restraining his leg in some painful way with some kind of leg hold. A parrot is NOT a wild bird of prey and even those do not have this kind of restraint put on them as it is cruel and not needed if bird has been provided with a cage suitable for his size. I don't know who told you to do this, but they are not only wrong but are also very cruel and do not deserve to have pets of any kind.

You have to take him to an Avian Vet, and there is a list of Avian Vets on this site or you can look around in your area. Your bird will need to be examined and an x-ray done on his leg to see if it is broken. This must be done quickly as your bird is in pain and if leg is broken, it has to be set quickly or will have to be re-broken causing much pain. DO NOT GIVE ANY MEDS NOT PRESCRIBED BY AN AVIAN VET. GIVE NO OVER THE COUNTER MEDS OR ANY FOUND IN PET SHOPS EITHER. ONLY AN AVIAN VET CAN PROPERLY DISPENSE MEDS BECAUSE BIRDS HAVE SPECIAL NEEDS AS FOR MEDICATIONS. Your bird is in great pain, so please move quickly in getting him to only a licensed and trained Avian Vet.
