Shabby feathers

Feather condition is always an indication of a bird's health - both mental and physical. Nearly any condition will affect feather quality. First, make sure you are feeding a good diet. Harrison's pellets are what I recommend.

Second, have your bird seen by an avian veterinarian to rule out any medical causes. Simply looking at your own bird is not a way to guarantee his health. A thorough physical exam by a trained professional with an unbiased view will be necessary to diagnose any medical conditions.

If this is not a medical condition and the diet is 80% pellets, the it may be a feather damaging behavior problem, such as over preening or plucking. Again, your Dr. will need to help you sort that out with a thorough history and physical.

An adjunct to good diet is regular bathing. 2-3 times weekly with plain water is sufficient. However, occasionally a bird bath spray is necessary; the only one I recommend is Avi-x Bird Rain.

Finally, the size of the cage can affect feather quality, especially in these species with long tails. For a pair of Alexandrian's you need a cage that is minimum 30 x 40, and larger is even better.

Hope this helps. Please let me know what you find out.
