alexandrine parrot - squawks

by Kerry

I have a 10 week old alexandrine parrot, and all he does is squawk, in or out of his cage,he's only in his cage when we are at work. Is this because his is bored.

Yes, if he is alone all day long with no other birds in the room, he is more than bored, possibly borderline psychotic. He needs a large, roomy cage with lots of chew toys in his cage. Not the acrylic kind, but ones with wooden pieces on them that he can chew. Shreddable toys would also work for him as well. Tracie has toys out here, so you may wish to take a look.

Next, you need to take him to an Avian Vet to see if the problem is physical. If he is sick or has any kind of underlying physical problem, he will scream for attention. So, before doing anything else, take him to an Avian Vet in your area and rule out physical causes.

If he is not sick, you will need to get him a companion. DO NOT PUT THEM TOGETHER IN SAME CAGE, AND GET A NICE ROOMY SECOND CAGE FOR THE NEW BIRD. Take new bird to Avian Vet to make sure it is healthy before putting it in same room with other bird. Put their cages where they can easily see each other all the time. Next to each other would be great.

Finally, birds are very social creatures and live in flocks in the wild. When they are captive, their flock is the humans and other animals and birds in the home. Being alone all day long every day except weekends will make a bird crazy with loneliness. He screams when you come home because he is either sick or wants attention so bad, he uses what he has, his voice, to keep you near him.

Thanks for writing and let us know how it works out. Please take him to vet for exam and get him a friend for during the day plus toys he can chew on and/or tear up.
