Amazon Parrot Was On Amakasin Is the Balance Problem From the drug?

The Vet answered my question about my Amazon having problems with balance. He suggested a blood test. Also commented that the Amakasin given to her can cause kidney failure. The reason for the Amikasin was she had a severe bacterial infection Klebselia, other antibiotics were not successful at getting rid of it. The Amikason was the only thing that worked.

My Parrot has not had recent nail or feather clippings. She is however molting on top of all the other things that had been going on. She is free of the infections now. My Vet did a blood workup on her last week- we just got the results and he said her blood work was fine.

When sick birds get balance problems, what is the cause, and is it permanent? Would a human drug like Antivert be able to be used in a Parrot, and would it help? Would this be Neurologic or maybe an inner ear problem? Also if the bird has any kind of tumor would it show up in the blood work?

Balance affected in Amazon Parrot

by Patti Stalma

My 35 year old Amazon had a bad bacterial infection which we just got cleared up after almost three months. She was on Cipro, Baytril, and had injections of Amikasin. She was cultured throat, sinuses etc and is free of the bacteria.

She has lost her balance and become very clumsy at times flapping her wings to keep from falling. I have read on the internet that birds that are sick can lose their balance. What causes this and is this permanent? If not how do I help her to restore the balance she once had?

She was very agile before this happened as Napes are known for their hanging upside down etc. She can do none of this now and it is worrying me. She has been better for about 2 weeks now from the infection, would she still be in a weakened state? She lost almost 100 grams when she was sick going from 560 to 460. She is at 484 and steadily gaing some weight back.

Should I be concerned about this? I am afraid of her falling and injuring herself as she is in a large cage about 6 feet high. I do not want to take her out of that cage as this is the only cage she has had for years. Will her balance ever come back? Please help. Thank you.
