Amazon Parrot eats too fast

by Lauren
(Miami, FL)

Hello I have an amazon parrot who is about 10 months old. She is on a pelleted diet (Zupreem natural). Ever since we got her she has had this problem where she eats way to fast and sometimes even chokes a little on her food and coughs. She eats her veggies and fruit slowly and dislikes seeds almost entirely.

Its just the pellets that she loves to choke down. I feel bad because I feel like she is still hungry. I started giving her extra which she would eat immediately until she started gaining too much weight and our Avian vet said to stop giving her the extra bit. She doesn't know why she eats so fast either.

Any ideas? I'm worried about letting her eat without me in the room because of the possibility that she may choke and I won't be there to help her.

Bird eating too ZuPreem fast
by: The Avian Vet

I must admit that this is an unusual problem that I have never experienced before. I also have never had to limit a bird’s food to prevent over eating. This just does not happen in birds in my experience.

I feel like there may be a digestive problem causing this. I also feel that ZuPreem may be a contributing problem. ZuPreem has lots of sugar which can cause yeast infections and can lead to digestive problems. Also all of the artificial ingredients can cause problems too.

I recommend that you change the diet to Harrison's, keep the pellets in at all times and supplement with fresh foods.

I also recommend that you buy a gram scale and monitor your bird’s weight. This will give you a better indication of whether your bird is gaining weight. You also need to monitor the droppings to be sure they are normal. Finally you need to have blood work done to see if there are any physiological problems. Find an Avian Vet
