by Lacey
(Bend, OR, United States)

My ten year old White Fronted Amazon Spectacle, Neo, is going through a mating phase. He has seen been noisier than usual. How can I go about resolving this?

Amazon Spectacle in 'mating phase'

He should calm down in a bit. If there is a possibility of it being anything except mating phase, then he needs to be examined by an Avian Vet. Unusual behaviors are the first red flag for us that something could be physically wrong with our birds, and a bird this age, not in a breeding situation, should not be doing so much of what you're calling mating phase. Though birds do get a bit hormonal directly after sexual maturity, they are generally either in breeding situations or settle down by this age.

I suggest you have your bird thoroughly checked for any underlying physical problems like the beginning of an infection either bacterial/viral. Some general bloodwork would also be good to see how kidneys, liver and thyroid are functioning. We recommend once a year exams to make sure birds are in good condition. If you are feeding high quality organic pelleted diet, no people food and no junk pellets like ZuPreem or Lafaeber's, he should be getting the nutrition he needs. If, per chance, you still have him on all seed diet, feed people food or other junk food, then you will need to change this to foods better suited to keeping parrots healthy. Here is link on how to go about this, and MAKE NO CHANGES until bird has been thoroughly examined by an Avian Vet in your driving area.
