Eva, it sounds like your bird is not tame, and you will have to do the work before bird is. Your parrot has to be taught to step up as they are not born knowing what humans want them to do. There are some training materials on this site you can make use of, and the internet is full of information about parrots including how to train them.

Before any training can begin, you have to have your bird examined by an Avian(bird) Vet in your driving area. There is a link on this site for some help in finding one though it would be better to use your local phone directory to find one closer to you. Your bird can ONLY be seen by an Avian Vet because regular dog and cat vets are not licensed and trained in the care of birds and can make some very bad mistakes in the diagnosing and treatment of them, sometimes costing birds their lives.

Bird has to be seen by Avian Vet before any training because new birds usually have some kind of bacterial/viral infection due to the stress of being moved around or other kinds of stress. Once your bird has a clean bill of health or has taken avian vet prescribed meds to clear up any infection, you are ready to learn how to train your bird. You need a book or two about parrots' general care and housing and one about just the Amazons as they are quite different from most of the other parrots.

Thanks for writing and keep us posted on your progress.
