amputate my 16 year olds cockatiels toe?

This is, of course, something that needs to be discussed at length with your Avian Vet. My humble opinion is to have the toe removed unless your bird is very sick from the cancer. The Avian Vet can do bloodwork to see if cancer cells are flowing through the blood or can do lymph node aspirations to see if cancer is spread throughout the bodie's systems. Have testing done before removing the toe as you may want to save him further suffering.

Sixteen years is not old for a Cockie since they can live up to 30 years, so I feel you will want to give him a chance to live. If, however, the testing comes back for metastisized cancer, then the most humane thing to do will be euthanization. Have the lymph nodes and/or bloodwork done BEFORE toe amputation because there's NO need to put bird through surgery if cancer has spread and is killing him.

I'm SO sorry you are faced with this, and hopefully cancer has not metastisized and removing the infected toe will be enough to buy him many more years. My heart and prayers are with you and your family as you go through this.

Thanks for writing,
L:nda
