Zeek's First Day - Quaker Parrot

Zeek is my first parrot (Quaker). He is 7 months old, and was hand raised. I have had cockateils when I was young, but Zeek is so loving. I got him just less than a week ago. He is shy, but is bonding well. He follows me through the house and is trying to talk, or at least I think he is. He purrs alot, especially at night when he is on my chest watching tv.

I work from home, so I am home all the time. This is convenient for Zeek and me both. He gets all the love and attention and I get company while I work.

My boyfriend got his sister. We are into music, so the house is always filled with noise of some sort. They are loud when it is quiet or when we leave.

Much to learn and experience with Zeek, and I hope that we have a strong bond for many years to come!

Your little Zeek sounds like quite a character!

One word of caution here. Please see that both birds get about 12 hours of darkness and quiet per night so they can rest and sleep. Do not keep them up til all hours because all birds do during the day is take little naps which are not the kind of real rest they need.

What I mean by darkness and quiet is they are put into their cages and into a room with no music, tv, or computer. They need this kind of peace and quiet or they will get sick from all the stress of constant noise and activity.

Birds are very sensitive creatures who like some peace and quiet some of the time, so keep the music down and play some classical and/or quieter stuff some of the time too so their nervous systems can rest.Keep in mind that they will try and do whatever it is you want to do, so do things that are good for them which is a little less stress in the house.

Thanks for writing, and very happy for you and your Zeek!

Linda

PS Keep your birds up off the floor because this is where they can get bacteria which causes infections. They need to be up off the floor at all times.
