I have a five yr old alexandrian and i was wondering if whole wheat rice cakes are ok to give to my parrot as treats once in a while?

Rice cakes

It is a bit confusing that your rice cakes are whole wheat but only have one ingredient, but as long as they don't have fat and chemicals that is fine.

Please read our Switching Budgies To Pellets article for help with converting your bird to pellets.

You must realize that your bird may take time figuring out that pellets are food, and then the bird will always prefer junk food to pellets just like we enjoy dessert over vegetables.

Rice Cakes, Pellets...

Thank you. I bought the rice cakes at Bulk Barn in the health food section. There is only one ingredient on the package (something like whole wheat rice and that's it) and it is not like I would only give him that (this would be like a once a day treat, just a piece, maybe not every day....here and there. I actually just bought Harrison pellets last week. The avian vet place i went to gave me some trial packages but my parrot does not like them.

I'll have to read a bit on here and see other sites for tips on how to introduce these to him. I tried mixing some with seeds but they're always left there, he doesn't touch them...if he only had pellets in his bowl, would he eat them if he was really hungry or would he starve? I will keep trying because I know for a fact that he is so picky at first with everything so I'll keep on trying....THANKS!!

If you are buying the rice cakes in a regular grocery store, they are most likely loaded with fat, salt, sugar and preservatives. Do not feed this kind of junk food to a parrot. Parrots will eat anything we give them, and it is our job to make sure what we offer is clean, natural without any fat, salt and sugar plus all the dangerous preservatives.Parrots are like small children all their lives, and they have to be encouraged to eat right just like a human child would need.

You could possibly find some in a reputable health food store, and here again, read the labels before giving anything to your bird.

As Tracie said, your bird needs to be eating high quality organic, pure and clean food like Harrisons pellets. These pellets are cold extruded meaning they retain all the vitamins, minerals, proteins and carbs a bird needs to be healthy. If you are feeding less than this, your bird is already in trouble.

Thanks for writing,
Linda

Rice cakes for parrots

Sure, as long as the bird is still getting mostly high quality pellets like Harrison's or Roudybush and the rice cakes do not have chemical flavorings or additives.
