Sick Budgie
by: Susan

I had a budgie whose voice changed. Then she started squeaking when she would breathe. She would hang her beak on perch like resting her head. I now believe this stretched her neck, which helped her breathing. I put her in a small nurse cage, and took her to the vet. She was prescribed antibiotics and a worming medicine. I used the meds exactly as prescribed. After finishing the medicine, she seemed a little better. I put her back with the other budgie, but could see that wasn't going to work. She was not well enough. Put her back in the little cage. Meanwhile, I was reading about bird illnesses. Said sick birds need extra heat so covered her cage and put a heating pad underneath the cage floor. Also read birds can have thyroid problems, which causes them to lose their voice. That was a revelation! So I purchased iodine and began supplementing her. In two days her voice was back, and she was her old perky self again. Like a miracle. She is now back with her little flock, happy and well. So now I supplement iodine periodically to all my birds. After her course of antibiotics, I did give her probiotics. I supplement this to the others too. Really need a knowledgeable bird vet or educate yourself on bird illnesses.

Budgie with possible infection
by: Tracie

This sounds like a bacterial or viral infection. The only way to find out what is wrong and what the correct treatment should be, you will need to take the bird to an avian vet.

Please use this Find an Avian Vet link to find an avian vet for your bird so it can be examined to determine what is wrong and what the potential treatment might be.
