baby amazon bonding

by cathy
(mo)

I have a blue front amazon parrot just 13 weeks old. I would love to hold him but he would rather stay in his cage. He was hand-fed. He will step-up but looks for a place to fly away too. His wings are clipped but he still takes off and hits the floor. What steps do I need to take to get him to want me to hold him (Chico). Thanks Cathy!

baby amazon bonding

Cathy, congrats on having a beautiful and very independent thinking baby Amazon in your life. If your baby is new to your home, there will be some time involved in him trusting you. Trust is earned not freely given with parrots, so don't expect too much too soon. Even handfed babies take time because they bonded with humans that were not you, so you are a stranger to your new baby.

There are some training materials on the Parrot Training page, and you'll want to take a look because your baby is exibiting wild bird behavior right now. If he was not handled enough when being handfed, then he is just being a normal parrot in need of being tamed and trained.

If he is new and before any changes in diet or training, he needs to examined by an Avian Vet in your driving area as birds' immune systems go down when being moved, especially babies, and they contract infections very easily. So before any training or diet changes, make sure he is healthy and free from disease or infection of any kind.

Thanks for writing and feel free to write anytime, as we are always here for you and your bird.

Linda
