baby bird ate a whole sunflower seed

by David
(Lethbridge, AB, CA)

My weaning baby cockatiel snatched a sunflower seed out of my hand and ate it she'll in whole. I can see it in her crop so I know he ate it, is this a life threatening matter? Or with her hand feeding formula and water will it soften and break down safely? she is the only one to hatch from the other eggs and we are very fond and attached to her. I need an answer ASAP.

Since you are in California where there are lots of Avian Vets, I suggeset you take him in and ask the same question of the avian vet.

He may or may not be able to digest this whole seed. A baby bird's crop is made to only be able to digest crop milk from their Mothers' or handfeeding formula from you.

If this stays in his crop, it will become toxic as it lays there and rots and does not digest. Please make an appointment and have an Avian Vet only do what needs to be done as we are not Avian Vets and cannot give you advice over the internet even if we were.

not a problem at all

Parrots and bird have very strong stomach muscle, very often they eat send to help them together with strong muscle to digest food...There is no chance that something would happen but i think that he dropped it and you just didnt find it...

I would call an avian vet asap!! Not sure if it would hurt it or not, but it could obstruct it's breathing.

I would call an avian vet right away for info.
