baby budgie

by shanine
(newcastle)

Hey, i recently bought my first budgie he is 11 weeks. i have never had a bird of my own before but my mother has a blue headed green amazon parrot, but these are ALOT larger than a tiny budgie so i still dont have any real experience.(and it is not very fond of me! It bites everyone but her) But I am worried my new budgie may have a cold and have been since i got him I got him from a man who breeds them and kept them outside. Though I keep him in the house i am constantly worried he could be cold! I hear him making what sounds like a small sneezing noise quite alot what should i do??? Please help! I have searched the internet and have had advice from sheets over the cage (which I am not keen on doing, i dont want him to feel trapped or hidden away!) To children's medicines in his water!! (I have never noticed him drinking his water though which is also worrying)
I am desperate to know If I am taking proper care of my budgie and get him to top health as I know he will be more prone to sickness as he is only young :( and winter and colder weather is approaching ... not that you get much hot weather in newcastle!

Budgie sneezing
by: Tracie

Linda is correct about your needing to Find an Avian Vet for your bird if it is sneezing.

As far as covering the cage etc. here is what our avian vet says. You do not need to cover the cage to keep the bird warm. If you have an air vent the blows on the cage, then you need to move the cage so that the bird is not in a breeze.

Birds have down feathers that keep them warm, if you are not having to wear an outdoor jacket in your home, then your bird will be fine. Birds can live in cool rooms as long as they are not in a breeze.

DO take your bird to an avian vet, because sneezing is usually a sign of infection. Also, since you have another bird you need to make sure your budgie doesn't have something contagious that will make the other bird sick too.

Your bird sounds sick, so take him to be examined by an Avian(bird) Vet in your area. Do this quickly because birds do not get over infections without diagnosis and treatment. Your new bird can also pass any infections onto the Amazon, so have your Mother read this and get your bird to an Avian Vet. Do not take to dog and cat vet as they are not licensed or trained in the care of birds and will either do nothing or give incorrect diagnosis and overdose with wrong dosages of meds. This can mean death for a smaller bird like your budgie.
