Balance issues with my African Red Bellied Parrot

My husband and I rescued an African Red Bellied parrot who is about 9 or 10 yrs old. Sometimes he will be standing on his perch or playing around in his cage and suddenly start to squawk and flap his wings wildly. He teeters back and forth, unable to maintain his balance. This passes within 30 seconds or so, and he goes back to his normal behavior.

What could be the problem?

Red belly

My Red belly does the same thing, I use to think she was stuck/ or trapped but every time I would rush over she was just rocking, squaking and flapping her wings! I read somewhere that they will do this for exercise .. So I never really looked into it anymore. She has been seen by the vet and has had a bunch of blood work done and is totally healthy do I'm not to worried.

Parrot losing balance

It sounds like your bird is having a seizure. Dr B will not be able to help you with this, because he would need to see your bird in person.

Please take your bird to an avian vet for an exam. It is possible that the previous owner only fed your bird seeds or some other poor diet. If your bird has not been on a healthy pellet diet, like Harrison's, then it may have fatty liver disease or any number of other health issues causing this.
