Beginners beginning
( An African Grey story)

Pongo posing for the camera

A beginners beginning is what I will start this out as. Our Family is considered as a beginner with a baby African Grey Congo. Pongo was hatched on March 12,2007. On July 21st We drove well over 200 miles to get our new family member. The breeder we dealt with was very nice and always helpful and still is to this day.

Pongo is a 2 person bird as of right now. But he is a tad bit more attached to me then he is to his daddy.

As for cuddling we are still trying to trust one another. Which will take time. Pongo is not a very loud bird until you start to run the vacuum cleaner, then he makes all kinds of noises and tries to get louder. When I am about to get ready to vacuum I will say, "Are you ready for the Jet engine?" and he will do his sexy whistle. Then we are off to all kinds of whistles and noises.

Pongo will not go to other people yet other than mom and dad. So the kids play with him when he is on his play stand. Or out walking around on the floor. You have to watch your toes around Pongo. I think he thinks they are mini snacks.

Living with Pongo is a learning experience for all of us and Pongo himself. We Love to just sit and watch and Listen to him. He allows me to give him kisses on his head. I will say, "Can mom have kisses?" and he will put his head down to let me kiss him. When we say "Love" he will let you pet down his back a couple of times and then he lets you know when he has had enough. We have his expressions down packed so we know when he has had enough of love and kisses. Every weekend he has eggs with his human sister but after awhile he seems to take over her plate.

Pongo gets a bath almost everyday. He gets in the sink and lets us spray him with the sink hose. Once he is done he will give his sexy whistle again and we say "Pongo's sexy" then he will flap his wings and fluff his feathers.

Thank you for sharing this story about Pongo.

This is a good start with your new family member. Birds, of all sizes, make fun pets when you really make an effort.

I will be looking forward to more about Pongo as you both grow in your relationship and as you add other family members.
