Bella - African Grey

Congo African Grey, Bella

Congo African Grey, Bella

Bella is a 6 year old Congo African Grey. She came to me as a birthday gift when she was 4 months old.

This is a true story about how smart birds can be.
I had two Cockatiels that had been given to me and I believe they had been here maybe 6 months. My Grandchildren wanted Diamond and Holly (Cockatiels)so I let them take them home that day.

After they left I asked Bella to step up as I wanted her to get on a play gym. She bit me but not very hard. I waited awhile until she was in a better mood to ask her to step up again. This time she really bit me hard! I was so shocked because that was very unusual for her to bite.

I called a friend that had several birds and told him about it. He said I know this sounds crazy but it will work. He told me to go to Bella and tell her that I loved her and I would never ever give her away and that Holly and Diamond were going to a new home where there are children and they are very happy.

I walked up to her cage where we were eye to eye and I told her all that and how much I really loved her. She looked at me so sweet and that has been almost a year ago and she hasn't bit me since. She really thought I was going to give her away and she didn't want to go.

So true for the CAG

I am always amazed at how smart they are ... people think it strange that we explain to our birds the situations and what is going on around them. But don't they explain the same to their small children? Then it is no different with our birds... Their intelligence can equal that of a three to five year old child.
