bird bites holes in her eggs

by KatMac
(Texas)

why does my lovebird bite holes into some of her eggs? doesn't this kill the baby bird inside? She has cuttle bone vitamins and very good food.

Bird breaking eggs
by: Tracie

You left out some information, so forgive me if I don't answer this completely.

If your bird doesn't have a mate, then there is not a baby bird in the egg. If the bird does have a mate, why are you breeding the birds?

If the bird is not interested in the eggs, then please remove the eggs as soon as they are laid. If the bird eats a spoiled egg, it will die.

If you are putting vitamins in the water, then you must honestly think the "good food" is not good enough. If you feed your bird a healthy pellet diet, not a cheap pellet diet, then your bird will have all the vitamins it needs. Adding vitamins to water often causes illness and death in birds because it gives your bird more than it needs and the bird becomes toxic and dies of organ failure.

Please read our Switching Birds To Pellets article that was written by an avian vet. Birds that eat Harrison's never have problems with egg binding, and that is something you need to be concerned about.

Another good article for you might be the Chronic Egg Laying article that explains how to care for birds that lay eggs.
