Bird Foot Chewing

by Darby

My bird has started to chew his foot. He will take it and shake it and pick (what I think is skin) off and it's swollen at the joint and just started this. he has never done it before. My mom and I clipped his nails and beak and washed his foot with warm soapy water. I know someone who had a bird chew his toe off because he did not get the attention he needed....Is this why my bird is doing it? What should I do? Is there a way to prevent it. He is a Quaker parrot. Thanks!!

Yes, you should be concerned. Dr B can not help, because you need an avian vet to examine the bird in person and possibly do a culture test.

Your bird might have an infection, and needs to be seen soon. Let us know how it goes.
