My Quaker parrot had string poop hanging out of him. This has been going on for a couple days. he seems otherwise healthy, is eating well and acting normally. What is causing this thread of poop and it it anything to worry about?

Bird Health - string of poop
by: Linda

Your bird is sick and has to be examined, diagnosed and treated by an Avian Vet only in your driving area. Since you are in Florida, you should be able to find several avian vets near you.

The stringy poop is one of the first signs of a bacterial infection. Birds hide their illnesses until they are too sick to stand up. Once he stops eating, it is a matter of days before he is dead, so do not waste anymore time waiting to take him to an avian vet. Take him to an avian vet only because they are the only vets licensed and trained in how to diagnose and treat birds.

Let us know what avian vet has to say and thanks for writing.

String of poop
by: Anonymous

Is it the same piece that has been hanging there for the past couple of days or is each poop a stringy one that won't come off?

If it's the same one that's been there all this time, it sounds like your bird ingested a piece of string; perhaps from a toy or from his bedding and all subsequent poops are just running down the string.

Have you tried to remove it or clean it? If you are afraid to try and remove it yourself, you need to take your bird to an avian vet.

Bird with poop hanging from vent

Yes, it is a matter of concern. Your bird could have an infection and the medicine prescribed would be determined by what kind of infection.
